This range of netbooks from market leader Acer marks
the maturing of the netbook market as customers demand more performance and features.

A new ultra-slim PC with 11.6-inch screen, the Acer Aspire One 751 series gets off the mark well with a larger screen than the original 9 inch monitors found on earlier netbooks but still wieghing in at not much more than a kilo. The extra few inches makes a lot of difference to the user experience since it means much less scrolling up and down. PC has a sleek design with rounded edges and a layout that makes it to appear to be very thin and stylish. Our test PC had a lid in white metallic color, while the rest of the computer was black. The Acer Aspire 751 is available in red, blue and black.
Connectivity for external display (VGA) and Ethernet are placed on each side of the computer, but the forward edge of the back – directly below the screen. This unusual position makes sure you get these cables out of the way. Aspire One 751 has totally flat keys and the keyboard is good to write on. The 11.6 inch LED-backlit screen has good brightness and we consider the picture quality as very good. The screen is of the “glossy” Crystal Brite-type, which looks very good – and provides clear and beautiful colors. But like other monitors of this type you can very easily reflections in the screen, and there is much light in the room can be a bit tiresome to work on. With a screen resolution of 1 366 x 768 pixels (16:9 widescreen) the web browsing and film viewing experience is much better than many of the mini-PCs which have a lower resolution (often 1024 x 600)
Thanks to the Intel Atom Z520 processor the machine has a low power consumption meaning models are available with upto 9 hours battery life even though the screen is larger than smaller netbooks with a similar battery life.

With 3GB of RAM and a large hard disk typically over 200GB (varies by different sub models) as well as a DVD RW player this is the type of machine some people are buying as a desktop replacement. At just under three kilos this laptop is not ultra portable but much more capable than a netbook and it’s not huge so well worth considering even for people that are on the move a fair bit.

5536 is a great choice for anyone looking for a high performance notebook computer that isn’t going to break the bank. The dual core AMD processor performs well with the supplied Vista operating system and the 3GB of RAM means multi-tasking is fine. One of the nice features of this Acer is the “pinch control” which allows you to zoom in as well as scroll around using the touchpad. Likewise a lot of thought has gone into the design of the keyboard making mis-spells less likely.

At under 3 kilos the Acer Aspire 5536 is portable though not ultra portable like some netbooks but then a netbook doesn’t feature an excellent 15.6″ screen and DVD player like this Acer does. You will probably get around 3 hours from a full charge. There are plenty of options available with the 5536 range including more RAM, hard disc space, Vista premium and switching the AMD Athlon to the faster Turion chip.

Asus Eee PC 1008 Review

Eee 1008 is a very stylish netbook with an amazing price.
You should be able to get an Eee 1008 for under £300 already.
At just 1″ thick and just over a kilo in weight the ASUS Eee PC 1008 is ultra portable and is already a big favourite with professionals that travel a lot.

Reminiscent of a Macbook air, this netbook can go five hours on a full charge. A sister model with seashell design, the Asus SeaShell 1005HA can give an amazing ten hours battery life on the auto power saving mode.

Asus are particularly proud of the ergonomic keyboard which is 92% the size of a regular keyboard and has been designed to reduce typing fatigue. It would be great to get some reviews of the keyboard.

Sony Vaio NS20 Review

This notebook from Sony caught our attention as it is a best seller at Amazon.
With built in webcam, Windows Vista premium, 15.4″ screen this laptop is from Sony’s NS range which is intended as their “entry level” or affordable range.
The Sony Vaio NS20 is not cheap at around £500 but it doesn’t look or perform cheap either, with 3GB RAM, and a 2.16 GHz Intel Pentium processor it’s got some serious processing power to run the bundled Windows home Vista Premium and some of the excellent Vaio software for music and film editing. Think about the DVD player, 4 USB ports and 250GB hard disk when you are comparing the NS20 range with netbooks.  This computer is so much more capable than a netbook but then again it’s more expensive, heavier and has shorter battery life. It just depends on your requirements but make no mistake this notebook from Sony is well worth a look.

A Sony Vaio NS20 weighs just under 3 kilograms, and you can expect around 2 hours battery life under normal conditions.
